C1V1 = C2V2 mass = molarity x volume x molecular weight moles = mass / molecular weight
Method and worked example
Choose one of four stock-solution workflows: dilution, mass from molarity, moles from mass, or concentration from mass and volume. For dilution, convert both concentrations to mol/L and both volumes to the same unit, then use V1 = C2 × V2 / C1.
Example: to prepare 100 mL of 1 mM solution from 10 mM stock, use 10 mL of stock and bring to a final volume of 100 mL. The Example button loads these values and units together.
Assumptions and limits
Use the molecular weight of the actual compound, including its hydration state. This workbench assumes the stated stock concentration is correct and does not adjust for purity, degradation, solubility, or chemical reaction. Dilution cannot create a more concentrated solution. Bring solutions to their final volume rather than assuming liquid volumes always add exactly.
Next: plan a 2x PCR master mix, or use the mass-to-molar concentration calculator and lab unit guide.
